This project involved a back-to-studs renovation of a Queen Anne cottage originally built in 1910. The result was a light and airy modern interior with ties to tradition.
Designed for a subdivided 15m wide lot, the two homes present a new approach to small-lot townhouse design. With reference to the neighboring historic cottages, the pair adopt a similar roof pitch, traditional material palette, large ‘porch inspired’ windows fronting the street, and a neighborhood scale that is rarely seen in new developments in the area.
Second story courtyards allow plentiful natural light on the interior to create bright and airy living spaces.
Hip and urban, this Shady Acres 4-pack was designed with the modern family in mind. Situated on an 65’ wide x 95’ deep lot, each townhome is flooded with natural light and includes a terrace that opens off the living spaces. This is smart and compact design at its best!
Designed for a 20m wide lot, this home incorporates a wrap around porch connecting the building to the generous front and side yard. While the farmhouse style exterior design maintains traditional elements and a residential scale compatible with neighboring historic bungalows, the high-tech interiors are designed for the contemporary family. Some features include an open floor plan to encourage fluid movement throughout the home, glass bi-fold doors that seamlessly connect the interiors to the outside, and floor-to-ceiling windows to frame views of surrounding historic oak trees.
